The best time of year to paint in Austin.
Spring and fall for exteriors. Any time for interiors.
By Kris Bohman, Owner, Hill Country Painting. Updated November 2026.
For exterior painting in Austin, spring and fall are the best seasons. Interiors can be painted any time of year.
Exterior, by season
| Season | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Spring (March to May) | Mild temperatures and good drying conditions, but spring storms can move dates. Book early, since it is the busiest stretch. |
| Summer (June to September) | Surfaces get very hot in direct sun, which can make paint dry too fast. Work is usually done in the cooler morning hours or on the shaded sides first. |
| Fall (October to November) | Often the best window: milder heat and steadier weather. |
| Winter (December to February) | Workable on warm, dry days, but cold mornings and frost can limit when paint can go on. Check the label for minimum temperatures. |
Interior
Interior painting does not depend on weather. The practical limits are your schedule and the paint's drying time, which is faster with the windows open and the house ventilated.
What actually controls timing
- Rain and humidity slow drying and curing, so we plan exterior projects around the forecast.
- Surface temperature matters as much as air temperature. Paint labels list a minimum and maximum, and we follow them.
- Our own calendar fills fastest in spring and fall. Booking two to three weeks ahead is realistic.
